Ethereum at a Turning Point

Questioning the Current L2 Direction

Ethereum is at a turning point.

Vitalik Buterin recently questioned branded sharding and raised concerns about Layer 2 centralization risks.

Too many rollups.
Too much control.
Not enough decentralization.

Ethereum has invested heavily over the past few years into L2s and rollups. Grants were deployed to scale its vision and support major projects across the ecosystem.

But now, the direction is being reassessed.

Vitalik is essentially saying that the original vision of L2s and their role within Ethereum no longer makes sense in its current form - and that a new path may be required.

This is not about abandoning scaling.

It is about rethinking how scaling aligns with decentralization.

Scalability without decentralization is not progress. It is simply speed with added risk.

The Reality of L2 Progress

Many of the Layer 2s built over the past few years have not progressed meaningfully toward decentralization milestones. Several never moved beyond early stages, and this lack of progression is slowing Ethereum’s overall development.

Instead of strengthening the ecosystem, fragmentation and centralization risks may be creating friction.

At the same time, the broader technical context has changed.

Upgrades like EIP-4844 and other base layer improvements now allow Ethereum mainnet to handle more activity at lower fees. The raw necessity for generic L2 scaling is no longer what it once was.

This shift changes the equation.

If the base layer becomes stronger and more efficient, then L2s must justify their existence through innovation, decentralization, and real infrastructure - not simply by offering lower costs or replicating existing rollup models.

The ecosystem is entering a filtering phase.

Some rollups will survive.
Some will fade.
Some will consolidate.

The winners will be:

Decentralized.
Trust-minimized.
Protocols - not companies.
Infrastructure - not hype.

A New Phase of Ethereum’s Evolution

The bigger question emerging from this shift is strategic.

Is Vitalik moving Ethereum into a new vertical?
Are the Ethereum Foundation and its leadership shaping a new narrative for the next cycle?

The message appears clear: innovation must go deeper.

Rather than expanding the number of rollups, the focus is turning toward decentralization, architectural improvement, and stronger infrastructure foundations.

Ethereum is evolving again.

And historically, when Ethereum shifts direction, the industry follows.

We may be witnessing the next stage of Ethereum’s evolution - one that emphasizes real infrastructure over proliferation, and decentralization over convenience.

The coming cycle may not reward the loudest projects.

It may reward the most aligned.
